Obligatory “What I Played In…” Post Part X: April 2016

Coming shortly on the toes of my last post we have plays from April of 2016.  This was an interesting month of plays because we really got a bunch of new stuff and thus had some new stuff to try out!  As well as the new stuff we bought I was also able to make some trades that I was very pleased with.  While we didn’t get nearly as much as last month, we were still able to get in 59 plays for the month.  Enough of the intro stuff, let’s move on to the post!

Statistics:
Total plays in Aprils 2016 – 59
Total unique games played in April 2016 – 21
New games played in April 2016 – 7
New games acquired in April 2016 – 9
New expansions acquired in April 2016 – 6
Most plays of a single game – 9

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1

Designer – Matt Leacock/Rob Daviau
Publisher – Z-Man Games
Last play before April 2016 – 1/20/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 9

Wow.  I’m not sure what else to really say about our plays of this game.  Em, Sean, Lainey, and I have now made it through nine months of the game and we are on an awesome roll!  We have crushed the diseases and laid them bare in our wake of viral destruction.  All the while we are having an amazing time and loving everything about the game while getting completely immersed in the story that has been crafted by the designers.  I would highly recommend this to everyone…and that is all I have to say.

Red7

Designer – Carl Chudyk/Chris Cieslik
Publisher – Asmadi Games
Last play before April 2016 – 3/19/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 9

Well here is a surprise…a whole bunch of plays of this game in a month!  Okay, if you’ve read my blog at all you know that Red7 is one of our favorite, super-quick fillers.  We love just taking this game everywhere and pulling it out whenever we have 5-10 minutes to kill.  Always a simple, fun time!

Coup

Designer – Rikki Tahta
Publisher – Indie Boards & Cards
Last play before April 2016 – 3/19/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 6

Em and I have made no secrets that we are big fans of Coup.  This is such a quick and small game that is easy to teach and even easier to play.  We’ve been able to teach many different friends this game and we are able to break it out at many different game nights and we just have a ball playing it every time.

Codenames

Designer – Vlaada Chvátil
Publisher – Czech Games Edition
Last plays before April 2016 – 3/20/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 5

April brought out a bunch more plays of Codenames at a game night and as always it went over great.  This is one of those games that should just be a staple in most game collections as it really goes over well with all types of people and never leaves the gamers wanting.  Go and buy it!  Plus, it’s cheap!  And we, as gamers, have to love that!

Baseball Highlights: 2045 (Super Deluxe Edition)

Designer – Mike Fitzgerald
Publisher – Eagle-Gryphon Games
New to me
First play – 4/11/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 4

This is a game that I had really been dragging my feet on for quite a while due to its relatively high price point.  Finally, I broke down as I had a very good idea that not only I’d love it, but so would my wife, Em.  I was completely correct!  This game is totally awesome and we are absolutely loving the back and forth, tactical card play.

Mottainai

Designer – Carl Chudyk
Publisher – Asmadi Games
Last play before April 2016 – 3/30/16
Totally plays in April 2016 – 4

Oh do I ever love this game.  I am such a sucker for games that have multi-use cards and Carl Chudyk is a designer that loves that mechanic!  He does such a wonderful job with card games and to be honest I really want to get more by him!  I think I may try to pick up Innovations next and see what my wife thinks about that one!

Oh My Goods!

Designer – Alexander Pfister
Publisher – Lookout Games
Last play before April 2016 – 3/31/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 3

This is another game that has become a huge hit in our household as we are such big fans of card games with a little meat on their bones.  I enjoy every single play of this game and I don’t see that sentiment changing anywhere in the near future.

Artifacts, Inc.

Designer – Ryan Laukat
Publisher – Red Raven Games
New to me
First play – 4/4/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 2

We got this game early in the month a pulled it out.  We’ve become huge fans of Above & Below and wanted to see what Laukat’s other games were like.  This is a very fun dice-placement game that is pretty quick and easy to teach.  And of course, being that it’s from Ryan Laukat, the artwork is amazing!  I really like this one.  If you want a quick and portable dice-placement style game then this may be for you.

Bottom of the 9th

Designer – Darrell Louder/Mike Mullins
Publisher – Dice Hate Me/Greater Than Games
Last play before April 2016 – 3/23/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 2

Em and I pulled out and played this game a couple of times this month.  This is one of the games that we pull out on average once a month at the least.  It is just a completely fun filler game that really feels like the bottom of a 9th inning with the game on the line.

Coal Baron

Designer – Michael Kiesling/Wolfgang Kramer
Publisher – R&R Games
New to me
First play – 4/2/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 2

We got Coal Baron in a trade and it is our first Kiesling and Kramer game.  After playing this a couple of times I can totally see why they are some people’s favorite designers!  The easiest way to explain this game is that it is beautifully elegant.  The mechanics are beautifully designed and the game is amazing.  This is exactly what I feel a good Euro-style game should be.  My wife and I have greatly enjoyed this game and want to try others by the designers.

POOP: The Game

Designer – Blaise Sewell
Publisher – Feels Right Design
Last play before April 2016 – 4/19/15
Total plays in April 2016 – 2

I realized that it had been almost exactly a year since we had played this little, silly ice-breaker.  Thus, we pulled it out and had a ball.  Okay, not a great game, but it is a lot of fun with the right crowd, just light, silly fun.  On a related note, Feels Right Design got the go ahead and will be selling the game in Target.  I thought that was pretty cool for them!

Valeria: Card Kingdoms

Designer – Isaias Vallejo
Publisher – Daily Magic Games
New to me
First play – 4/9/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 2

Another one of the games that we acquired this month was Valeria: Card Kingdoms.  I saw this played and was interested in it from the get go.  I’ve been somewhat interested in Machi Koro (which this game seems to be modeled after) but I know it has its detractors.  This game seemed to get rid of some of the problems that kept me away from Machi Koro.  Thankfully, we really enjoyed our plays of this game!  It does ramp up a lot at the end as you are just getting piles and piles of goods in order to buy other cards in some fashion.  It is a very fun game with incredible art by Mihajlo Dimitrievski (The Mico) which really gives this game an awesome look.  If you want a good, light dice rolling and engine building type game then you may enjoy this!

7 Wonders: Duel

Designer – Antoine Bauza/Bruno Cathala
Publisher – Repos Production/Asmodee
Last play before April 2016 – 3/23/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

What else is there to say about this game?  If you are looking for an amazing two-player game then you can’t do too much worse than this.  Also, it definitely has a place in a collection even if you have its big brother, 7 Wonders, as it is a very different game with a very similar feeling.  Love it!

Above and Below

Designer – Ryan Laukat
Publisher – Red Raven Games
Last play before April 2016 – 2/20/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

We got a good play of Above and Below in this past month.  This is easily one of the most beautiful games that we own.  Ryan Laukat has an amazing eye for art and so far we really enjoy his games.  I’m really looking forward to his sequel to this game, Near and Far, which will hit Kickstarter sometime this summer.

Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn

Designer – Isaac Vega
Publisher – Plaid Hat Games
Last play before April 2016 – 3/2/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

Woot!  This single play in April was our first with the new expansion decks, The Frostdale Giants featuring Rin Northfell, and The Children of Blackcloud featuring Brennen Blackcloud.  These decks are completely awesome and amazingly and thematically flavorful!  I love these decks and can’t wait to see what is coming up next!

Dice City

Designer – Vangelis Bagiartakis
Publisher – Alderac Entertainment Group/Artipia Games
New to me
First play – 4/9/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

This is a newer dice-placement game that came out this past Essen Spiel and has done pretty well for AEG.  We got it out to the table (it was in our new shipment) and really enjoyed it.  I like small, Euro-style cards as buildings that you are able to change on your personal board.  I also love rolling dice so, yeah, there’s that in spades!  This is a fun game, but beware, it is a table hog!

Mistfall

Designer - Blażej Kubacki
Publisher – NSKN Games/Passport Game Studios
New to me
First play – 4/9/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

I received this game in a trade this month and got it to the table very quickly.  I will say this right off the bat, I loved it!  This is truly what an adventure card game should feel like.  That being said I will state a word of warning; it is a very long, very involved game that doesn’t have the best rulebook I’ve ever read.  But, if you are into the theme and like a good adventure card game that don’t pass over this one without a second look!

Patchwork

Designer – Uwe Rosenberg
Publisher – Lookout Games/Mayfair Games
Last play before April 2016 – 3/23/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

What’s that you say?  We played a game of Patchwork during the month?  That’s crazy!  Oh wait, no, that’s expected!  We got this game in October 2015 and haven’t missed a month yet.  This is easily one of our favorite two-player only games.  It is what I consider to be basically a perfect abstract game, easy to learn, hard to master.  Love it!

Space Hulk: Death Angel: The Card Game

Designer – Corey Konieczka
Publisher – Fantasy Flight Games
Last play before April 2016 – 7/31/15
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

During a game night this past month, we were playing Pandemic: Legacy but had to put the game on pause while my wife fielded a call.  So, I decided to break this mean, little co-operative card/dice game out with my buddy Sean.  I will just say that my two squads died in the first hallway!  My dice rolling was definitely off.  Sean was able to step in and got us to the final hallway but that is when he got overrun.  I love this game and this play just made me want to break it out more often.

Tail Feathers

Designer – Jerry Hawthorne
Publisher – Plaid Hat Games
New to me
First play – 4/23/26
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

We’ve had this game since Christmas…and for some reason it has sat on the shelf since then!  I’m not one who has many games that go unplayed, as a matter of fact; every game on my shelf has seen at least one play and most multiple plays…except poor Tail Feathers.  I think I was slightly intimidated by this game (even though I’ve got The Gallerist pretty well down!) and that made me wait until I felt confident enough to teach it to my wife.  We loved it!  It was a great game that literally came down to a bad die roll by Em which enabled me to win on the next roll!  Great fun!

Taste of Poland

Designer – Violetta Kijowska/Marcin Senior Ropka
Publisher – Bomba Games
Last play before April 2016 – 2/22/16
Total plays in April 2016 – 1

We came, we played, and we cooked Polish cuisine…in an abstract sort of way!  We got a play of this fun little card game that has a cool speed element.  Em completely kicked my butt in this play!  This one is always a simple but fun time.

New game acquisitions in April 2016:
Artifacts, Inc.
Baseball Highlights: 2045 (Super Deluxe Edition)

Sentinels of the Multiverse (The Scholar Hero Character)
Sentinels of the Multiverse (Wager Master Villain Character)
Valeria: Card Kingdoms (Expansion Pack #01: King’s Guard)
Valeria: Card Kingdoms (Expansion Pack #02: Undead Samurai)

Oh man, what a month!  So many new games played and acquired and not a dud in sight.  In fairness, I am hardcore about researching games that my wife and I would like as we don’t have much disposable income.  I was incredibly pleased with these purchases/trades and look forward to future plays of them!  I’ll see you all soon as Em and I ramp up our posts for our Top 10 lists.  Keep your eyes peeled for them as they will hopefully start sometime this month.  Until next time, game on!

Obligatory “What I Played In…” Post Part IX: March 2016

And here we have it; our game plays from the month of March 2016.  Thankfully I got this one off in time.  You may be saying, “Aaron, last month’s ‘What I Played’ post was really late”, and you’d be right!  I wanted to make sure to finish the “End of 2015” series and that ended up taking up all of my time.  Now we’re back to a certain level of normal and these posts should come more or less on time.  March ended up being an incredibly prolific month of games!  We were able to beat our old record of 76 plays in a month with 80 in March!  Enough preamble, let’s move on to the good stuff!

Statistics:
Total plays in March 2016 – 80
Total unique games played in March 2016 – 23
New games played in March 2016 – 3
New games acquired in March 2016 – 3
Most plays of a single game – 11

Red7

Designer – Carl Chudyk/Chris Cieslik
Publisher – Asmadi Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/27/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 11

Well here’s a surprise, mine and Em’s most played game in March was Red7.  Anyone who reads this blog could have guessed that!  We still really enjoy this game as it is fun and so very quick to pull out.  We usually bring this out pretty much everywhere and play a few hands when we have some time.

Coup

Designer – Rikki Tahta
Publisher – Indie Boards & Cards
Last play before March 2016 – 12/13/15
Total plays in March 2016 – 10

Yay!  We got in some great plays of Coup in March!  It had been a few months since we’ve played and that is way too long in between games.  We always have a great time pulling this game out and having a rioting good time!

Oh My Goods!

Designer – Alexander Pfister
Publisher – Lookout Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/27/16
Total plays in March 2016 - 10

This game is quickly becoming one of mine and Em’s favorite games.  It is very quick to pull out and play and have some cool decisions for being such a small game.  This is a game we bring everywhere as we enjoy it so much.  Oh, and bonus for Em, she kicks my butt most of the time!

Mottainai

Designer – Carl Chudyk
Publisher – Asmadi Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/28/16
Total plays in March 2016 - 9

This game is becoming a favorite of mine.  I love the mechanic of multi-use cards in a game.  This is a pretty classic Chudyk game as he really loves using cards in interesting way and enjoys putting in some pretty cool combos.  This will be a game that we play for a long time to come!

Rolling America

Designer – Hisashi Hayashi
Publisher – Gamewright
New to me
First play – 3/2/16
Total plays in March 2016 - 6

We were walking through Target early in March and saw this little dice rolling game on the shelf for very cheap.  We decided to pull the trigger and pick it up.  We’ve really enjoyed this game.  It is a fun little puzzle that involved dice and placement of numbers on a grid style map.  This is a fun, quick and easy to teach game that anyone can enjoy.

Codenames

Designer – Vlaada Chvátil
Publisher – Czech Games Edition
Last play before March 2016 – 12/6/15
Total plays in March 2016 – 5

We pulled this fun little party-style game out in the first time in a few months.  This is a great game to break out with slightly larger groups of people or just when you want a quick and entertaining game that doesn’t take a lot of teaching.  This is always an entertaining game!

Castellion

Designer – Shadi Torbey
Publisher – Z-Man Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/28/16
Total plays in March 2016 - 4

I got in a bunch more plays of this tile-laying, solo/two-player game.  This is another great addition into the Oniverse universe that includes Onirim, Urbion, and Sylvion.  I would definitely recommend this one to someone who likes a good solitaire puzzle.

Patchwork

Designer – Uwe Rosenberg
Publisher – Lookout Games/Mayfair Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/18/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 4

Yup, I don’t know how much I can say about this one.  This has become a favorite and a go to game for me and Em.  We love this gem of an abstract game!  And, as a bonus, Em found some really cool blue buttons for cheap at a fabric store and we added them to the game to pimp it out a little!

Kraftwagen

Designer – Matthias Cramer
Publisher – ADC Blackfire Entertainment
New to me
First play – 3/16/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 3

I had been interested in this game for a while even since seeing Rahdo’s runthrough of it a few months back.  I love the theme of early 20th century German automotives and thought that the mechanisms of the game looked really good.  We found it for cheap on at Funagain and jumped at it.  I am happy to say that we really enjoyed it!  The game is the very definition of “elegant” with it central rondell mechanism.  I’d highly recommend this one to almost anyone!

7 Wonders: Duel

Designer – Antoine Bauza/Bruno Cathala
Publisher – Repos Production/Asmodee
Last play before March 2016 – 2/10/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 2

We were able to get another couple of plays of this two-player gem in the month of March and as usual they were awesome!  This is becoming one of our go to games for our Wednesday morning coffee dates and we love it!  I think this could possibly make a showing on Em’s top 10 list eventually!

Bottom of the 9th

Designer – Darrell Louder/Mike Mullins
Publisher – Dice Hate Me/Greater Than Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/18/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 2

We are always looking for a couple of games in a given month of this wonderful little baseball game.  I love how this really feels like you are in the bottom of the 9th inning trying to get that last hit to win the game or trying to pitch your way out of a jam to hold the lead.  I love this game and am looking forward to the Kickstarter they are supposed to having early in April.

Hanabi

Designer – Antoine Bauza
Publisher – R&R Games
Last play before March 2016 – 1/27/16
Total plays in March 2016 - 2

This game is just cool!  I love how you take your hand and hold it open face.  This is such a fantastic way to get people interested in the game.   I highly recommend this game for everyone as it is fun to teach, and incredible to play!

Mysterium

Designer – Oleksandre Nievkiy/Oleg Sidorendko
Publisher – Libellud/Asmodee
Last play before March 2016 – 1/10/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 2

Okay, I really love this game!  I have been the ghost every time so far but I don’t mind because this game really shows that games are meant to be played and enjoyed.  I love to hear the deduction and social parts of this awesome game!

Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn

Designer – Isaac Vega
Publisher – Plaid Hat Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/3/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

We got in a play of this incredible LCG-style game.  I love this game so much and (spoiler!) I think it will end up on my top 10 list.  It has so many pretty dice and I find it to be such an awesome battle card game.  I still can’t wait for the Brennan/Rin decks when they come out this month!

The Big Book of Madness

Designer – Maxime Rambourg
Publisher – IELLO
Last play before March 2016 – 1/23/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

I love this game!  It is a wonderful co-operative give that is a great puzzle for multiple players to work their way through.  We were able to teach this to Sean for the first time and it was fun to play through it with three of us instead of just me and Em.  Can’t wait to get another play of it in!

Empires at Sea

Designer – Zach Silverzweig/Amy Silverzweig
Publisher – (Self-Published)
New to me
First play – 3/23/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

This game was a new one for me.  I was contacted by designer Zach Silverzweig to see if I wanted to do a review of the game and I thought it would be fun!  I’m not going to go into too much (because the full review will be up, hopefully, very soon!) but I will say that Em and I had fun with it.  It is an exploration, empire building game that has some fun card play.  Check back here soon for the full review!

Forbidden Island

Designer – Matt Leacock
Publisher – Gamewright
Last play before March 2016 – 1/20/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

Em and I got a play of this in during March and we were able to teach her dad how to play as well.  He seemed to quite enjoy the experience and we won, although just barely!  I really want to try out Forbidden Desert as I think Em and I would prefer the weight of it over this one.  Not that we don’t enjoy Forbidden Island, it is a blast!  I will definitely hold on to this one because when my daughter, Fiona, gets old enough I want to teach it to her.

Rattle, Battle, Grab the Loot

Designer – Ignacy Trzewiczek
Publisher – Portal Games
Last play before March 2016 – 11/29/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

We went three months without playing a round of this fun game!  That is far too long!  Thankfully Em really felt like pulling it out so we played a really good round of it.  Em ended up making one bad decision and it ended up costing her the game as she lost by one point!  I don’t really understand people’s dislike of this game as we think it is just plain, simple fun…and isn’t that what gaming is supposed to be?

Snow Tails

Designer – Gordon Lamont/Fraser Lamont
Publisher – Renegade Game Studios/Fragor Games
Last play before March 2016 – 1/17/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

This is mine and Em’s only “real” race game and I think we may have the best with this one!  I love the card play and decisions in this game and it is just fun.  I also enjoy how quick it is to teach.  We taught this one to Terry (Em’s dad) and he picked it up pretty quickly and seemed to mostly enjoy how it worked once he started to really get the mechanics.  Try this one if you like racing games, it’s a great one!

Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Designer – Corey Konieczka/Justin Kemppainen/Jonathan Ying
Publisher – Fantasy Flight Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/3/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

And here we are, at the end of our 14 game long campaign of Star Wars: Imperial Assault.  I won with the Imperials and thus the galaxy is a more organized and “peaceful” place because of it!  I think this will be the last time we play this one as Em and I are finding that she isn’t really a fan of these types of games where she puts so much time in and then ends up losing and it feels like she’s lost the entire thing in just one game.  I enjoyed this for the most part but it may be up on the trading block now that we’ve finished the campaign…but at least the hero Imperials took home the win!

Tides of Time

Designer – Kristian Čurla
Publisher – Portal Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/6/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

Em and I played a hand of this fun, quick little drafting card game.  I always enjoy the thinking process during this game as you really have a ton of information as there aren’t many cards and you get to pretty much see them all during the game.  I’d recommend this to anyone who likes two-player games and drafting games.

Trambahn

Designer – Helmut Ohley
Publisher – Lookout Games/Mayfair Games
Last play before March 2016 – 2/10/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

Not much more to say about this great card game.  Em and I always love our plays of this one and I really enjoy the theme they pasted onto it!  This is another game I’d really show to those who love two-player games.

Viceroy

Designer – Yuri Zhuravlev
Publisher – Mayday Games/Hobby World
Last play before March 2016 – 1/13/16
Total plays in March 2016 – 1

Em and I played a good hand of this fun tableau building game at our weekly coffee date.  Neither of us really seemed to have a good strategy going but we ended up having some pretty decent score at the end.  I love the art on these cards and I’m looking forward to Zhuravlev’s new design that will hopefully come out this year, The Golden Sails.

New acquisitions in March 2016:
Empires at Sea
Kraftwagen
Rolling America

Well my friends and readers, there you have it.  These were the wonderful games that we pulled out and had a great time playing in March.  Come on back soon as I’ll have up a review of Empires at Sea.  Shortly after that Em and I will be putting up our annual top 10 game lists, then we’re going to be moving into convention season and those are always fun posts!  Thanks so much for reading and as always, comment with any questions!  Until next time, game on!

Obligatory “What I Played In…” Post Part VIII: February 2016

Well, it’s been a busy month of posts!  I hope you have all had a chance to read my “End of 2015” series of posts which tackled the games from 2015 and 2016 that I haven’t played yet and are most interesting to me.  I also have a post on my new, annual, “Late-ies” Awards.  Lastly I made a post that was simply my final play statistics from 2015.  It was a lot of fun making these posts and I hope that you’ve enjoyed reading them!  This one is another in my monthly series of “What I Played In…” posts.  This particular post is coming a little late, but these are the games that I played in February of 2016.  This was a slightly down month from our previous of 76 plays in January but we were still able to get a lot of great games in and we’ve found a couple of wonderful card games that could creep up our “best of” lists!  Alright, now let’s move on to the stats!

Statistics:
Total plays in February 2015 – 58
Total unique games played in February 2016 – 22
New games played in February 2016 – 4
New games acquired in February 2016 – 4
Most plays of a single game – 19

Designer – Carl Chudyk/Chris Cieslik
Publisher – Asmadi Games
Last play before February 2016 – 1/31/16
Total plays in February 2016 – 19

So, yeah, another 19 plays of Red7 this month!  It’s like Em and I really like this game or something!  Seriously though, this one has become a game that we just take everywhere because it is so easy to break out and play a bunch of hands while we are out at a restaurant or something like that.  It is portable and more fun than sitting there looking at our phones like zombies.  I highly recommend this one!

Designer – Alexander Pfister

First Play – 2/15/16

Oh holy crap…this game has become a HUGE hit with me and Em!  It is a multi-use card game and tableau builder with delightful art by Klemens Franz.  Along with being a game where you are able to use your cards in many different ways, it also has a touch of press-your-luck.  I can’t say enough good things about this game and Pfister has even created some v2.0 rules that take some of the luck out of bad card draws.  This is an amazing game all around and a favorite at our house.

Here is the first game on my list that was a birthday present.  I got this from my sister-in-law Molly and my brother-in-law Dustin.  It is another game in the Oniverse series by Torbey and this one is his first tile placement game.  It is a fairly simple solitaire style game where you are placing tiles with specific rules as to where they can lie and how they are placed.  Your goal is to place these tiles in certain patterns to protect your castle.  It is a great solitaire game!

Em and I got in a few more plays of this game and as always this game is such a wonderful two-player game!  I love how this game really immerses me in the theme and makes me feel like I am watching a game where the home team is up to bat in the bottom of the 9th inning and looking to get the winning run.  In some exciting news, there is going to be a big box expansion coming out for this game this year!  More content will be a great thing for this game!

Em and I were able to get a couple of plays of this wonderful re-implementation of the modern classic card drafting game, 7 Wonders.  This is a great two-player version and we love every play of it.  I think it took Em a couple of plays to really enjoy it as she wasn’t a huge fan of the automatic scientific/military victory conditions but now that she’s used to it she really digs it!  I highly recommend this one for people who enjoy a good two-player card game.  Just be aware, it is more cut throat than the original!

This is a new game to Em and I.  We picked this one up because we really like Quarriors! and were curious as to how the updated rule set for Dice Masters was.  We picked this specific version up due to my personal enjoyment of the lantern corps of DC Comics fame.  We enjoyed this one although I’m not quite sure it will beat out Quarriors! for us…only time will tell!

We got a couple of games in of this game on the same night this month.  We played it once and got trounced pretty hard so we decided to reshuffle and do it all over again.  This time we won but just barely!  We are really enjoying this game more and more with each subsequent play!

A slight dip in plays this month but that is only due to learn and playing a couple new two-player games.  This game continues to be one of our very favorite games and I would definitely say our very favorite abstract game.  I don’t see this one ever losing favor with us!

It had been a while since Em and I pulled this game out so we decided to dust it off and play a couple of games.  We have always enjoyed this game and so far it is ahead of the Dice Masters line in our own estimation.  I do hope to pick up an expansion or two for Quarriors! one of these days.

We picked this fun little game up and decided to play it a couple of times this month.  This is a very simple card game where you use icons on cards in order to make meals and score your cards.  This one has a slight dexterity element that we actually find to be fun.  This is a good game for people who like card games, slight dexterity elements, and slight speed rounds in their games.

This game is really become a go-to and a favorite game for us to play with each other.  The beauty and artwork of this game are undeniable and they go a long way in reinforcing the theme.  We also love the strong Euro-style play along with the storytelling element that is included in the mechanics of Above and Below.

We only got one play of Ashes in this past month but it was a really good round.  At this point I have to say that I would be somewhat surprised if this game didn’t end up in my top 10 list when I take a look at it in the next month or so.  Em and I have really enjoyed this battle game and we can’t wait to get our hands on the new decks of Brennan and Rin in April.

Em and I got a play of this little gem at one of our coffee dates that we have in the mornings after we take Fiona to school.  I actually won this round even though I think that Em was on a bit of a roll in the previous rounds.  This is just quick fun.

Okay, one play of this in a month is not enough!  I got a solo play of it in and got my best score but I am still really chomping at the bit to get the one played more often with Em.  So far this has been one of my new favorites and I could see this making an appearance on my top 10 list if not this year then next.  It is a great, deep, fun sandbox-style game that is always a fun experience!

Yay, the first play of this game was on my birthday!  This is a game I’ve been looking forward to for some time.  I’ve heard that it is somewhat of a spiritual successor to Chudyk’s magnum opus, Glory to Rome.  The first play (this one) was rough but I will say that we’ve got our feet underneath us and it is becoming a favorite!  It is a very quick game and has some really cool cardplay and decisions.

Any play of Seasons (my top game…for now!)  is a great game in my opinion!  I had a pretty interesting combo going on in this round that I thought I was going to ride to victory but Em ended up getting some pretty harsh cards that got her just enough crystals to win out in the end!  This still continues to be one of my favorite “card combo” games!

Em and I got a play of this one in and we took on Ambuscade who is a villain pack I got for Christmas.  I took Absolute Zero and Guise while Em used Tachyon and The Wraith (her favorite) to fight against the mercenary.  It was a fun fight and he has some interesting cards but we were able to beat him down and Em finished him off with some of The Wraith’s powers.

Em and Sean continued the campaign to try and defeat the Imperials (me) and failed in this particular story mission.  This was final story mission before the grand finale!  We are going to finally get the last play in March and we will have officially finished the campaign!  It was a total blast and may have been popular enough to get another campaign box.

This is another game that we decided to pull off the shelf and play in February.  It has been a while since we played but this is always such a fun little game.  Honestly, I can’t wait till my daughter is old enough to play because I think she is going to love this one!  Takenoko is always colorful and always fun!

We got in a play of this little two-player, card-drafting gem in February and I was able to get a huge combo in the final round of the game!  This is a fun card-drafting game that does actually work with two people just fine.  Also, bonus, it has incredible art on the awesome tarot-sized cards.

Em and I have come to just love this quick game out of Lookout Games’ two-player line.  It has a Rummy-style play where you are playing the cards in order and trying to score the best runs you can.  This has become a regular during our weekly morning coffee dates.

Here is another game that is becoming a regular during our weekly coffee dates.  I am becoming more of a fan of this one as it is just quick and fun with two players.  I love good card combo games and this one has some in there that are just great.  Em seems to beat me a fair amount but that it totally okay!  I look forward to more plays of this little card and dice game.

Well, there you have it!  Another month of great gaming down and another post with the information.  These are all games that I enjoy and would suggest them to many different people from all different walks of life!  Below are the games that we added to the collection this month.

New acquisitions in February 2016:
Castellion
DC Comics Dice Master: War of Light
Oh My Goods!
Mottainai

Alright, thus ends this particular list of games that we played.  Keep an eye on the blog this coming month as I believe that Em and I are going to start our top 10 lists.  Please feel free to stay tuned.  As always, any questions or comments please free to post them in the comments below.  Until next time, game on!
